The Quail Family

Hello Blog friends!

It's TankaTuesday, and I've a poem to share.

The high desert is alive with activity, and my butterfly cinquain offers a glimpse of that excitement. This poetic form is
nine lines with the pattern of 2-4-6-8-2-8-6-4-2. Poet and inspirer Colleen Chesebro explains it further in her list of syllabic forms on her website.

Quails often visit our backyard and just as often they bring their chicks. This is my tribute to these precious visitors.
THE QUAIL FAMILY

I hope you have a wonderful week. I'll be busy with the raised beds in our back yard. The quail love to hop in and explore the enclosures, but they quickly scurry away when I come near.

I enjoyed your quail family poem. I think it could be interpreted as a metaphor for a human family. You look like you're enjoying working in your raised bed!

Thank you, Liz. I thought of it as a metaphor as well. And, you are right, I enjoy working outside (though my back complains a lot). 😊

I'm hoping so, Craig. I've got tomatoes, beans, various squash seedlings and seeds in place now - with more to come. I know you have a large garden - and fruit trees. I'm a beginner. 🌞

Beautiful, Gwen ... the poem, the garden, and the quails! I haven't seen any of those in years! I get lots of birds in my yard and at my feeder, but not quails. *sad sniff* Thanks so much for sharing all of the above!

Thank you, Marcia. I feel protective of the quails, especially this time of the year. When I lived in the Midwest and back East, I had birdfeeders, but I'm cautious of the predatory birds in this area. ❤️🌞❤️

Oh my, I love your quail family poem and the photo of them. Have seen pheasant around here and quite a few turkeys but never quail. What a great idea with extending the raised bed. I have 3 square ones but never thought about extending them and adding space for trellis in there in the extra holes.

Thanks so much, JadeLi. I haven't noticed pheasants in our area, but there are a lot of quail. The babies are particularly darling. 🌞

Hi Gwen I love the way the quail tell their tale in your poem, it's beautiful. It looks very hot and dry where you live it must be hard to grow plants and flowers. It looks like you have it in hand 💜💜💜

Thank you, Willow. We moved here two years ago, and I'm adjusting to the terrain. I spent 30 years in the Northeast and 10 years in the Midwest - both very different from this environment. Every day is an adventure. 🌞

The sweet quail has many spiritual meanings: protection, community, and protection to name a few. Gardening is one of my favorite activities, but it has moved from vegetable/flower outdoor gardening to growing orchids inside. From your smile it is obvious how much you enjoy being outside...and with the quail.

What a sweet poem written from the point of the bird. Your photograph is lovely, Gwen. It looks hot and arid. And yet, you manage to grow your plants. Wow! I wish I knew a thing or two about growing plants. My potted flowers grow on their own, thankfully.
