The Backstory for The Culmination

 Hello blog friends,

I've another backstory to share. This one is for The Culmination, a new beginning. You may recall that last week I focused on Redemption, A Father's Fatal Decision and also mentioned The Gift. And before these two, I talked about The Soul Whisperer's Decision. With each, I tried to explain my motivation for writing the story.

The Culmination is a little different, because it is the result of a journey - one that is difficult to revisit. While watching network news one night, I heard a suffering Syrian woman say to a reporter, "Just take the oil and leave us alone." Her painful tears prompted my quest. Oil?

To understand international tensions, there was much I needed to learn. My long-standing aversion to all-things-political had to be set aside. First, I focused on geography. I affixed detailed maps of Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States on my wall - where they remain today. I then tried to track U.S. military deployments and the locations of U.S. Navy carrier strike groups on the maps. And I included the locations of the Level IV Bio-Defense Labs. Diving deeper, I subscribed to five newspapers and multiple military YouTube stations and websites. I also watched or listened to the BBC and Al Jazeera English for international perspectives. Through this immersion experience, I found myself in a world I did not recognize, and it changed my life - permanently.

On a whim, I looked into the U.S. Senate Committees, particularly Appropriations and its Subcommittee on Defense. I noted how members voted and examined their investments in the large defense contractors and in oil. What I found left me with even more questions.

Every day for hours at a time, I studied the unfolding global events. When I finally began writing, I tried to craft a path that I believed might lead to a new beginning.

The Culmination was published in November of 2020. In February of 2020, I awakened from surgery to the news of a deadly virus spreading across the planet. The reporter claimed the origin was a wet market in Wuhan, China. I turned to my husband and said, "This is a lab leak." Then I learned that those who concluded the same were conspiracy theorists. I said no more.

I rarely discuss my findings, and I don't consider myself an expert on anything. But a question emerged from my research that remains, "Who profits?"

The Culmination, a new beginning is a book that changed my life. Though fictional, it is not just a story for me. Perhaps you've written a novel that altered your way of seeing the world. I'd love to know about your experience, I suspect others would as well. Won't you share?

On a final note, fiction writers often create alternate worlds to express complicated truths. Most of these truths are either personal or interpersonal. But I suggest to you that these dynamics are at the root of international conflict.

Have a wonderful week, dear friends, with plenty of time for writing your next best seller. I look forward to turning those precious pages.

Thank you, Craig. Like you, I'm always interested in the 'behind the scenes'. Writers spend much of their lives in alternate worlds, and it's fascinating to explore why they do what they do.

Your immersion into the world of international politics is very, very impressive! I think what writing fiction has done for my world view is to finally understand that the fictional world has to make sense, but the real world does not make sense and never will.

My goodness, Liz, thank you. Your conclusion is brilliant, and I share it. I don't watch the news now, but I read headlines. It's all too disturbing.

I wrote a book (the publisher has since gone defunct and the book unpublished) about the dog meat industry that is legal in 7 countries. It's a brutal industry, and my story gave me nightmares, lots of nightmares. I first heard of the industry because a reporter said, "Restaurants have taken dog meat off the menu during the Games." (The Olympic Games.) I did some research to see what the heck he was talking about. I saw a photo that horrified me. That was 30 years ago, and it still haunts me.

Thank you for sharing this, Priscilla. I read your book, Dog Meat, and was horrified by what it revealed. I didn't know that this industry existed before reading your story. I totally understand why it still haunts you - it haunts me. Some images cannot be forgotten.

I always enjoy the story behind the story, but this one leaves me unsettled. Clearly your research left you the same way, for which I'm sorry.

Yep, very unsettled, but I've moved on. Now my writing focuses on our common journey, and I write to introduce love and healing. Thank you, Staci.

I'm like you, Gwen a d usually avoid all things political. Your research though is unnerving and unfortunately we do need to ask who profits in any situation. Xo

The research was overwhelming and consuming, Denise. But, once I started, I had to keep going. After I published my book, I never opened it again. It was quite the journey. 💙

The amount of research and effort you put into learning about all these things is astounding, Gwen. I too, completely avoid all politics, but sometimes the facts are too blatant to ignore. A great look into the backstory of this book!

Thank you, Jan. It was a crash course in international politics, not one I want to repeat. 💙

This is quite a backstory, Gwen. I is good to look into why things happen but we have to know when to look away. Our current deep state requires us all to be cautious of our thoughts and words. It appears that the Justice, IRS, Treasury, and Homeland Departments have been weaponized with the citizen in the most. danger. Thanks for sharing your story.

Yep, as you said, we need to know when to look away. All my years of ignoring history/politics caught up with me. Thank you, John.

"Who profits?" That's a great question, Gwen. I enjoyed Culmination, and I am enjoying the backstory posts.

Thank you, Dan. In high school and college, I got through history and political science because I could memorize. I never learned a thing. This was a crash course for me and a huge wake up call. 😊

You handled the politics beautifully in your book, and it's even more powerful to me now that I know how much research you put into making it as authentic as possible. My current WIP has been four (five?) years in the making. Though it does not follow my life, it has caused deep reflection within me about my life and life in general. Thanks for sharing these 'behind the scene' moments, Gwen!

I love reading the story behind the story, Gwen. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like a mountain of research, but I have no doubt you handled the subject well. I also try to avoid anything political. There's too much hate involved.

Hi Sue, I belatedly read your response and wanted to let you know that I dislike anything political as well. I didn't expect to do this research, but one thing led to another - and ultimately changed my life. Thank you for stopping by and adding your wisdom. 😊

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
