Shades of Silence

Hello dear blog friends!

I hope you're keeping warm during this late autumn season. Temperatures in my area have dipped, and nights can be very cold. I often wrap a favorite quilt around me.

With the season in mind, writer Colleen Chesebro invites us to select at least one descriptive word (Kigo) from her list to use in a poem. I've chosen long nights, autumn winds, and quilt.

Below is a simple tanka, with syllables of 5-7-5-7-7. I'd love to know if you relate to this seasonal experience.

Have a wonderful week and bundle up!

Thank you so much, David. Her quilts are extra special, because she used scraps of material from my sisters' and my sewing projects. So, each quilt captures time in a beautiful way. ❤️

Many of us resonate with "grandmas quilt." I have such fond memories of her beautiful quilts and used them often when I lived in MN. The photo is a perfect match for your wonderful poem.

You did a very nice job on this, Gwen - it's lovely. The cold doesn't get to me as much as the wind. It always sounds more powerful when it's cold outside.

Aw, Grandma's quilt. I still have one of my grandmother's quilts. It's falling apart, so I'm afraid to use it. I bet she wouldn't want it to languish in a cabinet, so I really ought to use it anyway!

l've so many memories of Grandma working on a quilt, and always those memories bring sweetness. She was a quiet woman, but a great listener. We could pour out our souls and she'd respond with jewels of wisdom. :)

I think one of the nicer parts of being cold is finding warmth. A blanket, quilt, Afghan - a little weight and warmth to drive away the cold.

Gwen, the wind has been kicking up pretty regularly the last week or so. We had an unexpected blizzard last week but that melted. The temps are in the 50s in day and 40s at night. Glad you have a nice quilt to keep you warm.

Quilts, especially handmade are a warm reminder of those we love. We are the fabric in each other's lives. What great symbolism, Gwen.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
