Profundity...

Each week poet Ronovan Hester sponsors a Haiku prompt challenge, and folks (like me) try to follow his lead. This week the two words are sun and fun. If you have interest in this art form, please click on his name and you'll be guided to his website where you'll find detailed instructions.

I grew up in the California desert, but often our family would drive to San Diego and go to the beach. I've never surfed, though I love to watch the surfers. At the first glimpse of light, they are in the water where they wait for the waves. The process is a meditation of sorts.

I like to walk along the water's edge and watch the surfers as they wait. Somehow in doing so, my busy mind is quieted. Then when the perfect moment arrives, and a surfer crests a wave, my heart soars with them. They are the inspiration for this simple haiku poem.

You caught that moment of the sun and the waves and that surfer riding it.

I have had the same thoughts watching the surfers at Big Sur and Half Moon Bay. I have often wondered what it must feel like to catch a wave and I think you captured it beautifully.

Thank you, John. It has to be exhilarating catching a wave. They go out very early in the morning and after a few waves, they leave for work. What a beautiful way to start the day. :)

Hmmm... no surfers around here - I'll have to take your word for it! Well done - love "profundity"!

Thank you, John. There aren't any surfers in Branson either, and I miss watching them. Have a wonderful evening.

This is a great shot, Gwen. I too, love to watch the surfers. I've never thought of it as a meditation, but it makes perfect sense. The picture is amazing! Love it!

Thank you, Jan. What has always amazed me is that the surfers will sit silently for long periods of time, waiting for the perfect wave. It has to be magical, resting on the board, just the sound of the water. ♥

Lovely work, Gwen. The only thing I really miss about living in Sydney, is our stunning harbor and beaches. I'm now hundreds of miles inland, and whilst it is a beautiful little town, I sadly miss the scents and sounds of the ocean. Those gentle things always managed to calm me.

Thank you, Soooz. The water has an amazing way of comforting the soul. Blessings!

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
