An Election Tanka...

10/27/2020

Each week author Colleen Chesebro sponsors a Tanka Tuesday Poetry challenge. The theme for this week is "the illusion of power."

Within the United States citizens are captivated by the presidential election -- and the use and abuse of power. Because of this, I created a Tanka poem about the elections and used the basic Tanka syllabic structure of 5/7/5/7/7.

Wow, Gwen, “weary hearts” indeed. You nailed it!

Thank you, Kathy. It's quite the year, right. I'm kinda numb to it all. 💙

Thank you, Denise. I suspect most of us just want peace. ❤

Our constitution stipulates peaceful elections and (when necessary) transition of power. That's all I'm praying for at this point. Things have gotten so ugly.

I'm with you, Staci. My prayers are for our country, for all of us. Thank you, Staci. ❤

Dear Gwen, you nailed this perfectly. Our hearts, minds and souls are weary as we trudge through such hatred and division in our beautiful country. Thank you for sharing. Hugs!

Thank you, dear Jan. I'm one who always tries to "fix" things, but our situation is one in which there is nothing we try to keep our own hearts open. Hugs back.

Well spoken, Gwen. I pray that whoever takes office, it will be a peaceful election, peaceful results, and the winning candidate and party will strive to unite us.

This Tanka reflects my over it attitude. I just wish it was finished and we can all in our own way forget we even have a government.

I left an "and " out between "way" and "forget." A comma would work as well.

Thank you, John. I'm with you about the government. I'm just tired of it all. I care deeply but my one vote can't "move mountains." 🙂

Perfectly said, Gwen. I pray that our country will accept the results of the election peacefully. The violence must stop.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
