A new poetry form: Diatelle

3/2/2021

It's #Tanka Tuesday and author Colleen Chesebro has declared the first Tuesday of the month a Poet's Choice. She's also urged writers to consider alternative options, something new. I've followed her suggestion and tried the Diatelle. I'd never heard of this poetic form until Colleen's post. If you haven't as well, I'll explain. It has a complicated verse structure that includes syllables of 1/2/3/4/6/8/10/12/10/8/6/4/3/2/1 and adds an additional challenge of a rhyme pattern of abbcbccaccbcbba.

Below is my first attempt to stretch a bit with this demanding poetic form. I've entitled it YOU.

Hi,
Putting emotional feelings into a poem is not easy. Often grabbing the reader's attention is a difficult feat. You grab my attention with the first word, YOU. That along told me that you were speaking to me personally, and I believe each reader would feel this same tug.
A beautiful job Gwen of engaging your reader into their own emotional world.

You did so well, Gwen. I'm impressed. Such a beautiful moment you portraited and the perfect picture. I just finished mine and found this the hardest poem I've ever had to put together. It actually made my head hurt.
