The Monsoon Dance

Hello, blog friends,

In the high desert, we've had some wild weather. Today we awakened to two successive Flash Flood alerts. It's the Monsoon Season, and she loves to be noticed.

Throughout the night, Ms. Monsoon flashed her glory and sounded her arrival, streets quickly flooded and lower areas pooled with rain. She seems to be quieting down a bit now, but the warnings are in effect until this evening. It probably comes as no surprise that this weather phenomenon inspires my poem today, especially since Willow invites writers to focus on the season.

The assignment this week was to write a particular poetic form: a Korean three-lined poem of 44 - 46 syllables called a Sijo. This is the first Sijo I've written, but given my new friend, Ms. Monsoon, the words came easily. I hope you enjoy it. 😊

Have a wonderful day, dear friends. I wish you sunshine and cool breezes -- and I wish the same for me. 😊

You did a very nice job with this prompt, Gwen. You captured the nature of a strong storm very well. I hope you're safe and dry. I've seen forecasts that show the southwest getting hammered. I hope it's mostly just a water event, and no serious damage or loss of life.

Thanks so much, Dan. It was a noisy night, but I think sunshine is headed our way today. I talked with one of my sons yesterday about the Northeasterner hitting your part of the world. Hopefully the worst is past. Take care.

We don’t have monsoon visits here unless they’re like what we call the rainy season here in Japan. But that’s a summer occurrence. But September has been so queer this year. It rained for 27 days non stop. And the days we saw the sun it felt like August: hot and humid. Sorry your sleep is being disturbed this way. But your sijo is the silver lining. Gorgeous, Gwen. So cool 😎 🙇🏻‍♀️ 👏🏽. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks so much, Selma, for the kind words. ❤️ Your rainy season sounds more challenging than our monsoon. Goodness, 27 days! Even after a couple days of rain, I miss the sun terribly. Sending hugs across the ocean.

Thank you, John. We've had more rain this year than in the last five combined. One blessing is that our water bill is half what it was last year. 😊

Hi Gwen, Your sijo brings the flash floods to life. I didn't know the rainy season was called 'monsoons' in the U.S. I thought it was an Indian thing. Flash floods can be dangerous. They are in India. Glad this was not destructive and went away peacefully.

Pools of water are everywhere but we now have a sunny day--and everyone is celebrating. Thank you so much Smitha. 🌞

That is an atmospheric poem. Here in north Texas we don't have a monsoon season but our 2+ months long hot weather period finally ended today. Yesterday it was 95 degrees. Today we have lots of rain, thunderstorms and flash floods. Stay safe from your flash floods.

The monsoon sounds worse than I thought it would be. Having heard about monsoon season, I thought it would be just heavy rain. Your great poem describes it fantastically.

I have tried to write Sijo but so far, haven't been able to. Very impressed at your first attempt!!! You capture the wildness of nature perfectly, Gwen.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
