Nature and Awe

Hello blog friends ~

Summer is exalted in the high desert of Arizona. Temps climb from the 60s in the early morning and reach 100 by midday. I try to walk the trails at the first sign of light. It's just me and little creatures who are outside at that time of the day.

This past week, I stumbled upon the research of Dacher Keltner, Ph.D. His focus is awe, and he claims that being in nature or other awe-inspiring situations improves health more than any other emotion. Rather startling, right? I had never thought of this possibility until I listened to a podcast on the topic. I've added a link, just in case you'd like to check it out.

Sooo, following Dr. Keltner's lead, we all need to escape into the natural world and breathe in the awe that it evokes. I can truthfully say that my early morning hike transforms my day. 😊

This week's Tanka Tuesday prompt, provided by Colleen Chesebro, inspires awe. She asks that contributors write a Puente poem (two Tanka poems separated by a quote). My poem focuses on nature and tries to capture some of what I feel on my walks. I hope you enjoy it.

Have a wonderful week, dear friends, an awe-some week. ❤️

Being out in nature is a wonderful feeling. It doesn't take much to be awe inspiring. I've found that in a tiny flower that pushed its way through a crack in the pavement.

I hope you're having a wonderful week. Between a searing heatwave and two days of rain, this morning will be my first chance to walk in 6 days. I'm going to enjoy it.

Beautifully captured, Dan. A tiny flower can change one's day. Thank you for pointing this out. I hope you're able to walk today. 😊

Thank you, Priscilla. Yep, even if we can only look out our window, we can be brought into awe. 😊

I love your nature poem and I agree, nature is awe inspiring and healing. I don't get out in nature a lot, living in Dallas, but I love nature, the forest and scenery. Your temperature swings are pretty big, 60 to 100. We also get 100 degrees or almost a 100 degrees, but it is warmer at night, high 70 or low 80.

Thank you, Thomas. My morning walk is really an embrace of life. My worries fade away and my heart is freed. BTW, as I write this, it's 101 outside. Thank goodness for air conditioning. 😊

Your poem is perfect! I feel the same way about being out in nature. I love that you were able to find research for verified evidence of what we know intuitively.

Thank you, Liz. Keltner's research is amazing -- but you are right, we already knew this intuitively. 😊

This could well be my theme song, I firmly live by it. Love the Snyder quote too.

Nature is my favourite place to be. It gives and does not judge. All we need to do is look and let ourselves be bathed by its grace.
I liked the quote you chose on nature, and the lines 'no interpreter needed/ we only need to listen.' Beautifully written, Gwen. Glad you're enjoying your hikes.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
