Mom's Strawberry Pie

Hello, blog friends ~

I hope you are enjoying the beginning of summer. Here in the high desert, we experience cool evenings and mild daytime temperatures, which are perfect for growing strawberries. I mention this because poet guru Colleen Chesebro is the #TankaTuesday prompter this week, and she asks that contributors focus on a beloved or hated fruit. AND if we feel inspired to do so, she invites us to include a recipe.

I'm a fan of strawberries, and I grow them in my garden. Each burst of red brings a smile and the anticipation of a culinary feast. As a child, I particularly enjoyed my mom's strawberry pies. I don't have her recipe, and I doubt she used one. "A little of this" and "a little of that" is how she cooked. Somehow, her desserts were always magical.

My poem is a simple Tanka, syllables of 5-7-5-7-7. I hope you enjoy it.

As I mentioned above, I don't have my mom's recipe, but I found this old gentleman's post and had to smile. He's much like my mom, and his ingredients are ones she used. So...enjoy this brief how-to video and imagine my mom or yours rolling out the dough.
Have a wonderful week, dear friends. With all that is going on around us, let's take time to eat some pies and travel back to childhood. 🍓🍓🍓

My mother used to make a wonderful strawberry pie too. My dad really liked strawberries and strawberry jam. When we lived in Alaska, my dad grew strawberries, but the moose ate most of them.😂

I'd love a piece as well, Liz. 😊 Grandma knows what's best, doesn't he? Have a great day.

Yum! Nothing like fresh strawberries. I have some in my garden but the birds usually beat me to most of them. Xo

Your weather sounds wonderful, Gwen, and your pie sounds delicious.

I remember my grandmother baking delicious bread, pies and cakes. I never saw a recipe.

Thank you, Dan. It's been beautiful, but supposedly it will heat up next week. Isn't it amazing to think of our moms and grandmom's food... brings back memories of a different time.

I love strawberries too and strawberry pie. We used to have a strawberry garden when I was a kid. In northern Sweden there are wild strawberries growing in the forest. The Swedish law says that anyone can pick berries, mushrooms, go hiking anywhere regardless if it is private property, so I took my daughter picking wild strawberries. She loved them and she said they are even much better than regular strawberries and I agree. You wrote a beautiful strawberry poem.

I do love fresh organic strawberries! I can't say as I've ever had strawberry pie, but do love strawberry shortcake. :) Thanks for sharing this lovely poem AND recipe!

Fresh strawberries and/or blueberries make the morning a feast. I've only rarely had strawberry shortcake (but love it). I think mom must have liked pie better than cake. 🌞

Hi Gwen, I love strawberries with nutella or cream, but since it's not the most healthiest way of eating them, I've stopped having them. I haven't ever tried a strawberry pie but reading your post makes me want to try.

Hi Smitha, I haven't made a strawberry pie, other than help my mom when I was a youngster. These days, I enjoy picking them and eating them right from the vine. 😊 But -- I'm thinking about making a pie.

Gwen, my mouth watered reading your poem. I love pie! If I can figure out how to make it crustless ( 😂 ) I'll be in there. What a delightful video. 🍓

It's a dilemma, isn't it? 😄 My doc said I could use flour from Italy because it is gluten free. I've recently picked up some, so we'll see. 🍓
