Love At First Sight

Hello, blog friends ~

In my part of the world, surrounded by the Prescott National Forest and elevations stretching upwards of 7,000 ft., wildlife are abundant. Almost every day, I see pronghorn. At certain times of the year, I encounter javelina, but more commonly, I see coyotes and rabbits--and many varieties of birds.

Recently, I was surprised by a mountain lion. It was early morning, and I was driving into Prescott. This magnificent cat leapt in front of the car as she headed into the mountains. It was love at first sight. ❤️ She glanced at me, and I at her, and to this day, I see her beautiful face.

Since today is Tanka Tuesday, I've chosen to use the above encounter as the inspiration for my poem. Colleen Chesebro invites participants to use metaphors to stir the reader's senses. I've given it a try through my simple tanka.

I wish I could say that I took the photo, but all the glory goes to Canva. I didn't have time to dig out my phone and snap a shot or two. The visit was, unfortunately, much too brief.

I hope you have a wonderful week, and if you've encountered a mountain lion, please share. This was my first and only sighting.

I'm sure the mountain lion you saw was as magnificent as the one in this images, Gwen! I would have lived at first sight also. I love all the big cats, lion, leopard, tiger, and cheetah... How wonderful your sighting inspired you to write this beautiful poem.

What a lovely poem, Gwen, and an amazing experience. We saw a bob cat in our front yard in Prescott as we walked the dog in the morning. Vince stood in place and clapped his hands. I turned the dog towards home and walked as calmly as I could away from him or her. We have pictures that a neighbor took of a mountain lion just outside and down the hill from our front door in our first condo. They are around, but not usually in plain sight. Marvelous that you were able to capture your experience in poetry. :) Thanks again for your lovely review.

I was so stunned to see it, Marsha. Even thought I had read of sightings in Prescott, I never thought I'd see one. 😊

The experience is out of this world. Oh my! Bless you, Gwen. And the poem that resulted is spectacular. Places us right between you and royalty. Wow. Thanks Gwen. Happy summering. Selma Martin

Love the poem, Gwen! Yes, I saw a mountain lion just last week. It ran up our road then dashed into the bushes as the hubster and I were out on a walk.

Seeing the wildlife would be wonderful to me, Gwen, especially the pronghorns and mountain lion. Your poem is fabulous. A mountain lion does seem to be royalty.

Gwen, what an experience! You're blessed to live so close to nature. All I saw last week was a groundhog moseying across our yard! 😂

The majesty of the mountain lion is evident in your poem. 💜

I have never encountered a Mountain Lion in the Wild but I've seen them at zoos and in other enclosures. It is amazing that you saw in in the wild but I would think it would be scary. You wrote a beautiful poem.

I've been out of town and am catching up on old posts today, Gwen. Though mountain lions are beautiful to look at, they can be deadly. A well-publicized attack occurred in our area, making national news. A woman saved her husband from certain death by stabbing it in the eye with a pen and hitting it repeatedly with a log. Here is the story from 18 years ago: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-65-saves-hubby-from-mountain-lion/

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
