Early Morning Walks

Hello, blog friends!

I've another poem to share related to summer. It is a response to Colleen Chesebro's #TankaTuesday prompt. Over the span of my life, I've lived on both coasts and in the Midwest. Now I live in the high desert of Arizona. Each locale is very different, but one characteristic they share. Beauty.

Daily I'm drawn into the natural world through solitary walks. I listen and merge into the silence. The journey is a prayer of sorts, because the dominant feeling is peace.

Below is my three-Tanka poem. I hope you like it.

Have a wonderful week, and if you live in the United States - enjoy the fireworks!

It's hard not to think that glorious wilderness above beats out either coast.

This is lovely, Gwen. I walk early, and you captured the feeling when I am walking (and it's quiet). I'm in a suburban setting, so quiet isn't always easy to come by, but when I see birds and bunnies starting their day with the sunrise, I do feel part of their world, as opposed to their being part of mine.

Hi, Gwen. The more I read your posts, the more I discover how much we have in common. I absolutely love walking and wholeheartedly agree that it is a great antidote for an overactive mind. Your poetry is beautiful!

Thank you, Donna, how kind of you to say. We've a lot in common. I've not walked the Camino, but I've both read about it and written about it in one of my books. Someday, someday... 😊

Evocative poem, Gwen! I agree about beauty being found in all sorts of different landscapes. I think my mother-in-law's Kansas is as beautiful as my youth's Alaska is as beautiful as the Blue Ridge is as beautiful as the Texas plains.

Hi,
I really like this one because I too am a early riser and love coming downstairs and listening to nature talk. It always makes me think of the Psalm 19, The Heavens declare the glory of God. It is amazing what Nature shares when we immerse ourselves in quietness.
Have a happy Fourth of July.

Lovely poem, Gwen. I could hear the cicadas and all the birds. I agree that all parts of the country have their points of beauty. I'd rather be here than the Midwest right now, though. :) Have a great week. xxx

Thanks so much, Marsha. I'm glad to be living here as well. Some of my sibs live in Imperial Valley, CA, and today they face temps of 120 degrees. I'm glad I'm not there. 🥵

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
