Could It Be?

Hello, blog friends ~

Today I'd like to offer a personal reflection as well as a poem. I've combined the two for this week's Tanka Tuesday.

As far back as I can remember, I had questions. It didn't matter the topic. I always wanted to know more, and I especially wanted to understand people - their journey, their beliefs. I'm pretty certain that my whys were irritating to my parents. As farmers, the world was straightforward to them. But it wasn't to me.

My questioning nature led me to explore different lands, different religions, different ways of seeing. I found a home among mystics, because they universally embrace one common tenet - Love. And that tenet resonates with me.

My mom was a Catholic and my dad was a Protestant. I never heard them argue one belief or another, but Mom kept a picture of the Shroud of Turin in the bedroom. Everyday I'd look at it and wonder, could it be?

Last week, my sister shared that the little Catholic church I attended as a child would sponsor the traveling photographic display of the Shroud. Brawley, California is definitely not Turin, Italy, nor is the display the actual Shroud. Nevertheless, I'm excited to see the exhibit. Hubby and I will travel to my hometown tomorrow.

If you've questions or interest, there is plenty of research about the Shroud online. My poem focuses on the question, Could It Be?

I love your question Gwen... My parents were the opposite of yours my mum from a Protestant family my dad and Irish Catholic. My mum's family disowned her at first but she became a Catholic. I am not a Catholic I am I hope christian . 💜💜💜

Thank you, dear Willow. It's amazing how much pain is caused by religious differences. A couple of years ago, I went on a retreat led by a Rabbi. I was the only non-Jew there, but it made no difference. The focus was Love, and I fit right in. ❤️

I didn't used to believe the shroud was THE shroud, but after reading the research on it (from both sides), I've come to believe it is real, and that makes me feel humbled and honored to see the images on my little laptop screen. Have a wonderful trip, Gwen!

Thank you, Priscilla. We'll be on our way within the hour. I'm excited to be with my siblings...and I don't have the words to express my heartfelt feelings in spending time with the images of the Shroud. ❤️

The question of the Shroud of Tourin's authenticity is a fascinating one. Do we go with science or faith?

Thank you, Liz. It was a very moving experience to view the exhibit and read about how it has traveled through the centuries, as well as the research that is ongoing. It was one of those "unforgettable" experiences. 😊

Logical question, Gwen. At times, faith overcomes logic. In my old age, it is trying to.

Thank you, Tim. It was an extraordinary experience to view the exhibit, and for me, science and faith met as one. 😊

I'm the same way, Gwen, always trying to understand. How cool you will be able to see that. Could it be is a great question and exciting to think about.

Thank you so much, Jan. I think you are right about being a seeker. The visit with my sibs was wonderful, and experiencing the Exhibit was extraordinary. 😊

It's an intriguing question, Gwen. I was trained as a scientist, but when science and faith collide, I tend to give a lot of latitude to faith.

The Exhibit was extraordinary, Dan. Emotional, yet science-based. And for me, faith and science merged. Thank you. 😊

The shroud. There is an original. But we can’t all see THE original when we please. The replica is good enough. Here in Japan there are places where people make long lines to touch the hand of a God. But obviously not allowed inside. So temple staff have attached a very long rope that goes from the Statue’s hand to the people outside. Make what you like of that, but everyone celebrate touching THAT hand that way. A replica of the Shroud compares to me. Thanks for sharing, Gwen. Enjoy your trip and fill your heart and soul with what is on display. Bless you. Selma Martin.

I probably will, Robbie. It was an incredible journey through time, through people's hearts and my own. I'm left with a deep sense of the sacred and our human longing to know more. ❤️

So much peace could be achieved by solidifying all walks of faith. What a beautiful premise for this piece.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
