Birthday Reflection

Hello, blog friends!

Yep, it's true - another birthday approaches. This one, more than others, has evoked considerable reflection. Maybe it's the crazy times in which we live, maybe it's a growing awareness of personal finitude. Whatever the reason, I find myself revisiting life junctures. Do you do the same?

My writing adventure began with a memoir that wandered through much of my life. But today I'm simply sharing two poems. The first reflects on when I was 25 years old and living on Salt Springs Island, BC, Canada. The second poem tries to capture my current years.

What have I learned in the seven plus decades? Well, I'll spare you the list and focus on just one aspect of my journey. Life taught me through difficult challenges to value myself and what I believe. So, I walk away from situations that are unhealthy. If there is nothing I can do about the circumstance or people, I entrust it/them to the Divine and let it be. This simple process has brought much peace.

I hope you have a wonderful day. Let's all celebrate!

There's so much to be thankful for. Sometimes it takes a wet mountainside to show us the wonder of life. ❤️

You have focused on one of the most important realizations in life, Gwen. We are never truly alone, and there is always something worth living for. We can make a difference, and even if it only affects ourselves, it's worth it. If we manage to affect others positively, the day has been blessed. Happy birthday!

The first poem is so painful yet still beautiful, but the second poem made me smile. Happy upcoming birthday!

Thank you, Priscilla. Time is a great healer, and for some, it may take a lifetime to see the miracles. ❤️

Wonderful, Gwen. The way your poetry describes your feelings about nature is beautiful. I, too, think accepting God will do what is right is what we should do.

The sadness of the first poem is more than off-set by the joy of the other. Such a miracle to be able to look back and still have a full heart about where you are today. I hope your birthday is filled with love and peace. Also, your message about walking away from unhealthy situations has resonance and understanding.

I love how you put this poetic meditation on your life together. The poems and the images work so well together. I was particularly moved by the first and last stanzas of 25-year-old you.

Thanks so much, Liz. I tried to show the contrast between the young and the old me. I'm elated you liked them. ❤️

What a difference between the poems, Gwen. So much wisdom and peace can come with age and perspective. Even when life is hard and breaks our hearts we can embrace the miracle of our short lives and love. Beautiful, my friend.

One dark poem and one lighter poem but both very beautiful, and I liked the pictures too. Happy birthday Gwen.

Today is my birthday and I am now 73. How did that happen? I love both of these poems and yes, birthdays are a great time for reflection. Happy early birthday to you, my dear!

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
