A Moral Challenge

Hello, dear blog friends.

Over the last few years, I've shared wildlife stories with you. I've written about the wolf who crossed my path, the coyotes who haunted me, the beautiful mountain lion who paused and glanced at me, and the many javelinas that have made me walk faster in the opposite direction. BUT, this week I have a special surprise.

At the edge of a nearby farm, I discovered two little guinea pigs munching on grass. I couldn't believe my eyes. The last time I had seen guinea pigs was when my kids were young, and those little creatures were in a cage.

These tiny ones have become a moral challenge for me. I suspect they escaped their confines or were let go. Either way, it's dangerous for them to just wander. I'm trying to find the owners, but I worry that the bigger creatures will discover them before they are rescued.

When I received the Tanka Tuesday prompt, I thought of my new little friends and decided to write a poem about them. Melissa Lemay offered the prompt and suggested we compose a Shadorma (3-5-3-3-7-5). I hope you like my effort.

A moral challenge indeed. Poor innocent ones. And having been kept, if that is the case as you suspect, the poor things might not know of the dangers they’re faced with. I worry that the predators will sniff them out. I do hope you find where they ran away from. And that they’re welcome back. Your Shadorma has lots of heart. Thanks Gwen. Xo, SELMA

Thank you, Selma. There are workmen by the road this morning, so I can't see if the guinea pigs are there or not. I'm hoping they've returned to their home, wherever that may be. 🌞

I do hope they can be reunited or find safety.

Thank you, Dan. I'm planning on going to the Humane Society to see if they help guinea pigs. 🌞

I hope the guinea pigs will be all right. I had one when I was growing up, and I remember him with great fondness.

I hope you can help them. They sure won't last long out in the wild.

My thoughts as well, John. Against the natural predators, they don't have a chance. 🌞

Gwen, I can't imagine how some people live with themselves! I feel bad for the guinea pigs. 💜

I wonder the same, Colleen. These little guys are defenseless against the predators. 😢

The wildlife you see is amazing. I've never seen a javelina. I hope the poor little Guinea Pigs will be fine.

It is amazing, Thomas. I don't like the javelina, nor the coyotes. My favorite is the pronghorn. They are exquisite, and they roam freely near us. 🌞

It is a challenge for you to get them back home, Gwen. I hope you can succeed. Your poem certainly describes the danger in the wild for them.

Thank you, Tim. I didn't see them this morning, but there are workmen on the road, so they could be hiding. I hope so. 🌞

An interesting conundrum, Gwen. They may survive on their own. they have instincts.

Thank you, Robbie. They've disappeared, so I'm hoping someone adopted them - or - as you wrote "they have instincts" that will keep them safe.🌞

How wonderful you had seen the amazing creatures, Gwen! I hope the poor guinea pigs will find their way home and are found by the owners soon. Lovely poem. I love it.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
