A Miracle

Hello, dear friends.

It's been quite a week, right? It seems the entire planet is engulfed in flames - real or emotional. Here in the high desert, I escape from it all when I walk in the early morning. Just as the sun peeks over the mountains, I saunter. It's a quiet and refreshingly cool time of the day. I'm often moved by the miracles I see -- quail families, rabbits, songbirds -- and butterflies.

The poem below is a response to poet Colleen Chesebro's prompt. It is a simple Tanka (syllables of 5-7-5-7-7), and my topic is a miracle.

Butterflies hold a special place in my heart. They are messengers of Light for me, and I always take time to listen - to their gifted tidings. Do you do the same?

I hope your week is gentle on you and yours -- and replete with miracles.

I see many animals on my morning walks. I stop and take pictures of some. Others I just let them be. But I always stop for the butterflies.

Beautiful poetry, Gwen.

Beautiful, Gwen! It has been cool here in Michigan, with nightly temperatures in the 50s.

Thank you, Tim. Enjoy the cool weather. It's already 95 outside, and it's only 9:30 in the morning. But my pumpkin and squash love the heat and are spreading rapidly. 🌞

Such a pause, tiny, but as large as the cosmos. Beautiful presentation, Gwen. Yes, I take them as messengers from the beyond. Out at the nature area on Tuesday we say untold numbers of butterflies, many of them very small. I like how you describe their broad shoulders (that can carry the world on them.)

I'm glad you're getting your walks in, Gwen. Early mornings tend to be beautiful no matter where we are, and the coolness must feel wonderful. A beautiful butterfly, and what a gift to behold. Your poem is lovely, and I'm wishing you many miracles. <3

I see butterflies and know they bring me messages. All the ones I’ve seen since spring I’ve named Lilly. I get visited almost daily. And I know it’s Lilly by how they come so close suddenly. I miss my friend but we’re still in touch in the realms of miracles.

Your tanka is most lovely. Your words! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much, Selma, for sharing your friend with us. How very dear! When I see butterflies, I know my mom is visiting. She loved them, painted them. Now I think she expresses her hellos through them. 🦋

Gwen, this tanka was so lovely. The other day, I just read that butterflies can't see their wings, yet they know they're there. Now, that's believing in the unknown! 💖

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
