A Legacy of Valor

Dear friends,

I've another Tanka Tuesday poem to share, and it includes a story. Yvette invited interested folks to write a poem about resilience and pointed out that life teaches us to "push through our obstacles." When I read that line, my thoughts went immediately to my father and our men and women in uniform.

Many in my extended family served, but I know very little about their experience. None of them talk about it. WWII, Vietnam, Middle East -- Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines -- not one talks about it. But all of them "push through" their obstacles, even if those hurdles are not visible.

When I looked through my family photo album, I saw images of my dad in his Navy uniform, and I saw pictures of him post-war working in the fields. I only knew him as a farmer, but it struck me that both soldiers and farmers trudge across barren land. Maybe we all do -- figuratively.

 My simple, two-stanza tanka:

I hope the rest of your week is blessed with much laughter. And whatever you might be doing for country and/or for family, thank you. Your legacy will not be forgotten.😊

My father and uncles never talked about WWII, either. They served, and I'm sure they pushed through many obstacles during their service and long after. Very nice poem.

Yes, soldiers and farmers alike must deal with the elements. God bless them both. I enjoyed your poem, Gwen.

My dad died when I was young, so I never heard any stories from him. He was the squadron navigator for carrier-based dive bombers and flew a mission over Iwo Jima and Tokyo. My uncle served as a P38 pilot over Europe and, in his later years, told me stories about his and my dad's experiences. I was very grateful for the time he took to give me insight into their challenges. Lovely poems, Gwen.

Thank you for honoring our veterans and our farmers, Gwen. They deserve our gratitude and respect. My dad served in the Pacific in WWII, but not in combat because his eyesight was so bad. He saw the damage done after the fighting was over, including young girls selling themselves on the street for a piece of bread. Seeing all the damage wrought by the war is what prompted him to go into the priesthood. ("We need better people, not better guns.")

It's nice that you show respect for those who served, Gwen. My dad couldn't serve in WWII because he had polio as a child and the result was one leg was pretty bad, making him limp badly. The military wouldn't take him.

I suspect your dad was very proud of you -- walking in the footsteps he could not take. Thank you, Tim, for your words and your service journey. 😊

Gwen, I come from a family of farmers and military service, as well. In my recent Ancestry.com research, I learned that my uncle, who came to America from Russia, lost his life at 21 in WWI. I'm always amazed at the resilience of our families and how we continue to move into the future. This was a lovely double tanka. 💙

Two aspects of resilience military and farming, both risky, one deadly, Love your take on the prompt Gwen.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ―Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
